Product description

This Bearbrick presents an extraordinary artistic reinterpretation that creatively combines two legends of Japanese manga history. Astro Boy, the iconic robot character created by Osamu Tezuka, is depicted here in the signature drawing style of Fujio Akatsuka, the legendary king of gag manga. This Artist Edition from Series 32 from 2016 is a loving homage to the close bond between the two artists, who lived together in the famous Tokiwa-sō, the Tokyo apartment complex that became the nucleus of modern manga culture, in the 1950s.

The design perfectly captures Akatsuka's distinctive gag manga style, giving the heroic robot boy a whole new, humorous dimension. Astro Boy appears here with an exaggeratedly wide grin, revealing his prominent upper incisor, and large, spiral-shaped cheeks in bright orange, typical of Akatsuka's anarchic humor. The black hairstyle with its characteristic spikes sits atop the light, flesh-colored body, while the gray ears emphasize the bear-shaped silhouette. The green belt with white stripes and black pants make up the lower part of the outfit, complemented by red boots with white details. This version depicts Astro Boy not as the heroic robot, but as a cheerful gag character, celebrating the humorous side of manga culture.

Osamu Tezuka, often called the god of manga, revolutionized Japanese pop culture with Astro Boy in 1952. His 100,000-horsepower robot boy became the first half-hour anime series and influenced generations. Fujio Akatsuka, on the other hand, known for works such as Osomatsu-kun and Tensai Bakabon, established gag manga as a distinct genre with its irreverent, anarchistic comedy. Both artists were part of the legendary Tokiwa-sō circle, where Tezuka served as a mentor to the younger Akatsuka. Akatsuka himself was inspired to become a manga artist by Tezuka's work "Lost World."

This Bearbrick interpretation is more than just a figure—it's a piece of manga history that celebrates the creative union of two masters of their craft and reimagines Tezuka's iconic character through Akatsuka's humorous lens.

However, the joints vary depending on the size: In larger models (400% and 1000%), the arms and legs usually rotate in a single plane. Smaller Bearbricks (especially 100% and 200%) often have ball joints, allowing for more flexible movement of the limbs.
